I'll confess here and now that I am not the greatest caster in the world, in fact I may not even be the best caster on my street. That means I need every advantage I can get when throwing a weighted Crazy Charlie into a 20 mph wind.
I've been casting into tropical winds for close to twenty years, so I have learned a thing or two about getting the fly in front of my targeted quarry. One of the best ways to help an otherwise imperfect casting stroke is to construct leaders that turn over and straighten out, even in unfavourable conditions.
Preparing for a DIY bonefishing trip is different than preparing for a trip to an established lodge.
Here is what you get when you travel to an established bonefishing lodge:

Just got home from a month in the Bahamas where I had a great trip and enjoyed some wonderful fishing on Abaco.
Let’s face it, as a DIY flats fisherman you are going to be casting to spooky and educated fish. Why; because you are casting to bonefish that can be reached by driving, walking or kayaking. The fish you will see are the same ones that every DIY fisherman is casting to and they have seen a lot of flies.
Understanding tides and the effect they have on bonefish behavior is critical to the success you will have catching fish and planning your trip.
There is some great reference material available on tides and bonefish behavior written by true professionals that I would encourage all of you to read. They have spent a lifetime on the subject and clearly understand the relationship between tides, the moon and bonefish behavior. I have listed some of the references below.
